Don't Start a Workout Plan without asking these five questionsSo you have decided to start a workout plan and change your life.  Whether you are out of shape or want to add muscle, you need to get started.  But you have looked online at a lot of websites offering training plans and weight loss strategies and all you are left with are more questions.  There are programs that teach you how to eat right and programs that tell you the perfect workout and that everyone gets great results.

But how do you know if it is the right workout plan

This article will help you get on the right path to finding a workout plan that fits your needs and goals.  By asking yourself these questions you will be able to get started on a plan that can not only get you in the shape you want but also keep you on that path for a long time.  With these action steps you will find working out fitting into your life rather than trying to make it fit in and never giving it a chance. So what does it take to find the right workout plan for you?

1) WHO are you?

Finding the right workout starts with figuring out who you are.  Are you an athlete with previous fitness experience?  Are you an outdoor type that likes hiking and climbing? Are you a stay at home mom that only lifts her kids as exercise?  Start with finding out who you are and what you like to do.  Make a list of at least 5 activities that you could see yourself doing to get your heart rate up.  Playing basketball or soccer are a great fitness activity and you get your cardio going.  I for instance am a basketball player and can play all day and never get tired of it.  Other people I know stay in shape by running 5 miles or marathons, something that I really struggle in doing.  That would be a strategy that starts and ends really fast if I were to do it.  So whether it be hiking, walking, shopping, basketball or any other sport use that as a way to get in shape fast.

2) What is your BODY TYPE?

Asking yourself what body type you are will help in assessing what you can and can’t do while working out and getting in shape.  Some people don’t look at their body type and think if they start a workout plan all of sudden it’s going to change the way they look significantly.  At times you can make that change, but overall we are who we are and fundamentally need to understand that and be okay with what we look like to achieve any significant goals.  I can tell you how many people I have seen make significant changes and then get really obsessed about losing a few more pounds in a specific area that is extremely difficult for them.  To know yourself is the best workout I know.  You can be discouraged by it or embrace it and learn to work with it.

3) What TIME do you have for your workout plan?

I can’t tell you how many people commit to a workout routine and never see it to the end because it doesn’t fit into their schedule.  Well that is a two-way street.  You have to make time to workout for sure but you also have to make sure it works with what you do for a living.  If you need to eat 5 meals a day and workout five days a week, you have to make sure that you have that kind of schedule and flexibility.  If you work 12 hour days 6 days a week that might be difficult for you.  So making sure that the workout plan you choose can work with your life is huge.  If you find the right plan then you will have success but if you choose one that has you losing an uphill battle from the beginning, you will probably fail.

4) Are you ACCOUNTABLE?

You need to know if you can make yourself workout when needed or do you need to have someone tell you what to do.  Hopefully you are a self-starter so you can get motivated and reach your goals by yourself without assistance.  But if you need to be motivated or need someone to tell you what to do, you are going to have to find that.  What options do you have?  You can have your best friend keep you inline.  But if that could cause an end to your friendship then you might want to find an alternative.  Hiring a personal trainer is another way.  Also finding a forum or someone online to help you reach your goal can be beneficial.  By setting up a workout routine that a partner can do with you is another option.  Whatever it is, make sure you know what you need to be successful.

5) What is your MOTIVATION?

To accomplish any goal you set out in life you need motivation.  Most of the time when it comes to weight gain or loss we have some ideal look that we want and we are trying to get there.  Most of the time that isn’t enough.  We tire of that goal because it becomes unattainable.  You need to make sure that whatever your motivation is that you can keep a passion for it until you reach your ultimate result.  There are peaks and valleys and frustrations with any types of accomplishment.  Will your motivation keep you going through all of that and more?  I can’t tell you how many times when I was young, I thought I had a workout plan that would help me gain weight and become a bigger stronger athlete, only to end up quitting before I accomplished it.  So find something that will burn for you a long time.  Only then will you be able to reach your ultimate weight goals. These five questions should be the first things you ask yourself to be successful in any workout you choose.  There are so many ways to accomplish weight goals out there, but choosing the right one for you is the best way to actually make it happen.
